JME manuscript shells

Journal of Monetary Economics requires authors to submit manuscripts for review in 12 point type, with line spacing, for ease in reviewer and editor evaluation.  Publications in JME use different formatting and the editors recognize that authors of finally accepted manuscripts may wish to experiment with the likely appearance of their manuscript in Elsevier proofs.  The information below provides guidance on DRAFT and FINAL format in several standard word processors.  Authors are encouraged to provide additional format information (send contributions to rgk4jme AT gmail.com).

Scientific Word or Scientific Workplace

(These instructions assume that the version is at least SW 5.0, but the files are applicable for later versions)

A. Installing SW ingredients.

A style file, sw20nhej2.sty, must be placed in the subdirectory “SW macros”.  In a typical installation of SW version 5.5, this subdirectory is called C:\swp55\TCITeX\TeX\LaTeX\SWmacros. Click on file1 to get this first ingredient and then save it as sw20nhej2.sty in the correct directory.

A class file, sw20nhej2.cst, must be placed in the subdirectory “[Special]”.  In a typical installation of SW version 5.5, this subdirectory is called C:\swp55\Styles\[Special] Click on file2 to get this second ingredient and then save it as sw20nhej2.cst in the correct directory. [Note: in some installations of Scientific Word, one must place this file in the directory C:\swp55\styles\article].

A JME shell, Journal of Monetary Economics.shl, must be placed in the subdirectory that contains shells. In a typical installation of SW version 5.5, this subdirectory is named c:\swp55\shells\articles\sw. Click on  file3 to get this third ingredient and then save it as Journal of Monetary Economics.shl in the correct directory.

B. Creating a new document

In SW, go to FILES and choose the option NEW

Under the option SHELL DIRECTORIES, choose ARTICLE

Under the option SHELL FILES, choose Journal of Monetary Economics. This gives you a new document: save it with a new name (like test.tex). If you typeset this new document, you should see the material that is printed here.

Make sure that the current style is “C:\swp50\styles\[Special]\SW20NHEJ2.cst”, by going to FILES and choosing the option STYLE.

Converting your existing document to DRAFT style for JME.

Step 1:  Entering the body of your document. Don’t just convert your original document!  Delete the material in the body of the new document and copy the contents of your existing document (mydoc.tex)  into the new file (named test.tex above).  Save your new document

Step 2: Modify the front matter.

Copy the front matter from your existing document (mydoc.tex) into your new document (test.tex).  Save your new document.  When you typeset this document, the result should be a double spaced manuscript with 12 point type and line numbering.

This format is appropriate until you receive a decision letter that instructs you to upload final manuscript files.  And you need not ever use anything else: it is completely fine to submit the final manuscript with this format.

Converting your draft document to final JME style

This style was developed because the JME editors understand that some authors want to produce a “near proof” version before sending the paper to Elsevier’s production department.  Such a version allows the author to anticipate issues that will arise when smaller font type and wider margins are used in the proofs and the published version.

Step 1: Getting started

Open your draft document (test.tex) and then save a copy — that you will convert to final style – with a new name, say testfinal.tex

Step 2: Set the typesize

Select: Typeset

Select: Options and Packages

Select: Class Options

Select: Body point text size = 10 point

Step 2: Set the line spacing

Select: Typeset

Select: Options and Packages

Select: Package Options tab

Select: Setspace package. Click the Modify button to change the “currently selected options for the package setpace” from doublespacing to singlespacing

Step 3: Change the margins

Select: Typeset

Select: Preamble

The standard margin for draft mode is set with the statement:

\geometry{left=1in,right=1in,top=1.25in,bottom=1in}

Change this statement to

\geometry{left=.65in,right=0.65in,top=0.85in,bottom=0.85in}
